Shoemaker-Bond Home Association, Inc. Fund
The Shoemaker-Bond Home Association, Inc. was linked to a VFW Post in Topton, Pa., named for the first two servicemen from the Topton area to be killed in World War II. Veterans who belonged to the Post, and their families, supported community activities and provided for the construction of a community center in which the members of the Shoemaker-Bond VFW Post met for many decades. In 1999, the surviving veterans who were members of the Post recognized that their numbers were decreasing over time. They gave the assets of the Home Association to the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation to establish a charitable fund that would perpetually support community organizations important to them, so long as those organizations exist.
Originally, grants from the Shoemaker-Bond Fund are made to the Longswamp Township Cemetery Association, Longswamp Boy Scouts, Longswamp Campfire Girls, Topton Boy Scouts, Topton Campfire Girls, the Scotland School, and Brandywine Heights High School. Today, grants are made to the Longswamp Township Cemetary Association, Girl Scouts of Eastern PA, Hawk Mountain Council Boy Scouts and Brandywine Heights High School. Grants to the latter support awards for class valedictorians and salutatorians as well as winners of citizenship essay competitions.
