Herman & Shirley Slozer Fund
Herman and Shirley Slozer were pillars of their community, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that led their estate to establish a designated fund at the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation in 2024 to benefit the Peace Lutheran Church in Perkasie, Pa.
The late Herman J. Slozer, Jr., was born in Bedminster Township and spent his life nurturing both his family and his community. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly through the Hilltop Flower and Gift Shop in Perkasie, which he owned and operated for 50 years. His dedication extended beyond his business as he actively participated in local governance and community organizations. Serving as President of the Pennridge Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Perkasie Borough Council, Herman was instrumental in shaping the local community. His commitment to education and mentorship was evident through his long-term involvement with the Upper Bucks Tech School and the Pierce Free Library.
Herman’s faith played a significant role in his life. He was a devoted member of Saint Stephen’s UCC and Peace Lutheran Church, contributing his musical talents as an organist and choir director, and his teaching skills as a Sunday School and Bible class instructor. His passion for music and teaching extended to the Telford Community and Saint Luke’s UCC in Ottsville, where he also preached and conducted services.
The late Shirley Ann Slozer complemented Herman’s community spirit with her own quiet strength and creativity. Born in Souderton, she brought warmth and joy to her family and community through her skills in sewing, cross-stitching, and baking. Shirley’s early career as a seamstress at the Royal Pants Factory transitioned into a partnership with Herman at the Hilltop Flower Shop, where she worked for 40 years. Her dedication to her family was paramount, as she balanced work and homemaking with grace.
Shirley’s involvement in Peace Lutheran Church mirrored Herman’s dedication to their faith community. Together, they created a nurturing environment for their children, Susan, Gail, Scott, and Joseph, instilling values of service and compassion. The loss of their son, Herman (Jay), in 1988 was a profound sorrow, yet they continued to find strength in their faith and family.
The Slozer family’s commitment to their community and church left an indelible mark on those who knew them. In recognition of their lifelong dedication, their heirs have established a designated fund at the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation in 2024. This fund aims to support local initiatives that reflect Herman and Shirley’s values of education, community service, and faith.
Through this fund, Herman and Shirley’s legacy will continue to flourish, fostering a spirit of generosity and care in the Lehigh Valley for generations to come. Their lives serve as a testament to the profound impact of love, hard work, and community involvement.
